Why I Upgraded to a Quick-Ratio Power Steering Gearbox
My 1964 Pontiac Tempest Custom came with factory power steering, but the original slow-ratio gearbox made handling feel vague and sluggish. It took too many turns to maneuver, and the response wasn’t as sharp as I wanted.
Upgrading to a 12.7:1 quick-ratio power steering box made an instant difference. Steering is now more responsive, cornering feels tighter, and parking is effortless—all while keeping the classic power steering feel. The swap was simple, retaining a factory look while making the car far more enjoyable to drive.
